How To Protect Your Social Media Privacy

It seems that everyone is into social networking, with websites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedln, and Myspace continue to dominate the online world. Social media sites have allowed us to conveniently connect and share information to people from around the world. Photos, videos, and other forms of multimedia can now be easily shared whenever and wherever you are via social networking websites so long as an internet connection is present. But this convenience also comes with a price – compromised online privacy. Good news is that, you can protect your social media privacy by taking proactive steps. Below are some great tips that will help you learn how to use social networking sites without revealing too much about yourself.

Be extra careful when clicking shared links. Do not just click links shared by your friends on your social media website. If a friend mails you a link, send that friend a message to verify if he/she really sent it. Treat the links being shared in social websites like what you’d do with links you receive in your email messages. To put it simply, links you receive in your social website should always be approached with caution.
Do not be too trusty. I have heard a lot of horror stories about Facebook and Twitter accounts being hacked. Hackers are capable of hacking into social media accounts, and send messages that will appear as if it came from your friend. If you suspect that a message you received is fraudulent, you can call or contact your friend to verify.
Be wary of your personal posts. You should assume that everything you put on your social website will stay there forever, even after you decide to delete your account. Knowing that, avoid uploading photos that might be downloaded by other people and maybe used against you. Also do not include personal information such as your birthday or home address on your social website. Hackers often break into one’s financial or social media account by clicking the ‘Forgot Password’ feature, which can be found in the login page. Therefore, as much as possible try to leave as little information about you as possible. When making security questions, try to come up with one that does not involve basic information about you. By doing this, you are adding an extra layer of protection to secure and preserve your privacy online.
Avoid clicking a social media link from your email or from another website. It is smart to always type the website address of the social media site directly to your browser. If you click through another website or email to get to a social media website, you are probably entering your login details into a fake website made with the intent to steal your personal information.
Screen your friend requests. Limit the number of people who can access to your social page. As much as possible only approve friend requests from people that you really know. Avoid accepting friend requests from total strangers.
Take note of the aforementioned tips to help you maintain your privacy online without compromising the quality of your social media experience.
