Making Better Computer Monitor Disposal Choices

Do you have old computer monitors that you want to dispose of? Unlike other items that you can easily throw in the trash can, computer monitors are known to contain cadmium, arsenic, lead and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) so you can’t just get rid of them like how you would normally get rid of trash from your home. So this begs the question, what is the proper way of disposing old computer monitors? If you have finally decided to upgrade to an LCD computer monitor, below are some of the better options for computer monitor diposal.

Recycle – Rather than crowding the landfills, it would be a good option to recycle your old monitor. Since monitors are not biodegradable, the best way to dispose of them is through recycling. Be a responsible citizen and do your part in saving the environment. Find shops that recycle computer monitors or other similar devices, like analog televisions. This way you are not only doing yourself a favor but Mother Nature as well.

Donate – Another good option to dispose your old computer monitor is by donating it. If you don’t think recycling is a good idea, then donating might be the best option for you. Find a local salvation army or a Goodwill store that accept donations. If you choose to donate your old monitor, you are not only ridding your home of clutter but you are also helping the needy.

G-Cycling – This is an effective and simple way of getting rid of old and bulky CRT monitors. Founded by G4, a video game tv network, G-cycling aims to do something good for the environment. G-cycling centers can now be found in different states in the US, thanks to the partnership of G4 with EMA (environmental media association).

Free-Cycling – This is yet another smart option to dispose computer monitors without causing harm to Mother Nature. Free cycle centers will receive the old monitor that you want to dispose of and they will give it to people who are willing to have them. Recipients of these items are either less-fortunate or someone who is in dire need of the free-cycled item, like someone interested in old computer monitors.

You can also contact your local government to know more about recycling or waste facilities in your area that accept old computer monitors. You should also watch out for recycling programs facilitated by the government where you can drop off your CRT computer monitors without having to pay for anything.
