It took Apple App store less than three years since its inception to achieve the massive and unprecedented mark of 10 billion downloads. The people at Apple wanted this occasion to be memorable and promised a hefty ten thousand dollar worth of gift card to the lucky person who happens to purchase the billionth download. That lucky person according to Apple is Gail Davis of England.
Seeing the enormity of App store now which boasts of having more than 350,000 free and paid for applications for the ifamily (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) it’s hard to imagine that it began with a modest 500 applications in July 2008. The store’s application collection augmented exponentially as its popularity went sky-high and through the roof. Statistics show that during the first nine months the store exceeded the 1 billion download mark and reached the milestone of 5 billion downloads in the month of June 2010.
The phenomenal success of App store has spawned a string of similarly inspired ventures from Apple’s competitors in mobile computing industry. Mentionable names that have followed suite are: Google, Microsoft, Research in Motion, Samsung and Nokia. These giants inspired by Apple have now a similar App store front which offers downloadable applications.
But like all trendsetting ventures, the App store has its fair share of controversies it’s shrouded in! Initially App store’s ridged approval criteria sorely tested the nerves of developers who often were left clueless as to why their meticulously designed applications were denied. Apple has recently attempted to make amend by announcing intentions to allow developers the freedom and luxury to architect applications with the tool of their choice and distributed its App Store Review Guidelines.
